Class 4 – At Salvation, You Are Baptized By The Holy Spirit Into Jesus Christ/The Church

In the previous lesson discussing the operations of God the Son at salvation, it was
mentioned that at salvation a person is put into Jesus Christ which is synonymous with being put into his
body, the church. It is the Holy Spirit who carries out this act. This act is referred to as a “baptism.” The
word baptism simply means “immersion” and the Holy Spirit at salvation completely immerses the new
believer in and into the Lord Jesus Christ and his body, the church.

Question 3 of 3

Note that in all of these passages the context is salvation and the spiritual baptism (ie.
immersion) of the believer into Jesus Christ carried out by the Holy Spirit. A careful reading of each will
show that water baptism is neither mentioned in these passages nor intended as it is impossible for water
baptism to put a person “into” Jesus Christ. Water baptism is merely a picture of the spiritual baptism
carried out by the Holy Spirit at salvation. Water baptism should take place AFTER salvation to
“outwardly” show to the world what happened “inwardly” AT salvation.

Some may tempted to make the baptism “by,” “with” or “of” the Holy Spirit all the same
thing – but God did not put any extra words into his Bible! Where God makes distinctions, we are
obligated to do the same. Spirit baptism is a two-fold work; not only does the Spirit immerse the believer
into the church (which is Christ’s body), but Christ immerses the believer with the Holy Spirit.

No where in Scripture is the phrase “baptism OF the Holy Spirit” found. The phrase
“baptism BY the Spirit” is found once (see above – I Corinthians 12:13) and the “baptism WITH the
Spirit” is found six times in Matthew 3:11; Mark 1:8; Luke 3:17; John 1:33; and Acts 1:5 & 11:16. All of
these verses refer to the work of the Holy Spirit initiated on the Day of Pentecost and subsequently
performed in every person today who comes to Jesus Christ.
