Class 4 – At Salvation The Holy Spirit Came To Live Inside You – You Received The Holy Spirit

Some elements of the Charismatic movement put a great emphasis on the need to receive the Holy Spirit AFTER a person has been saved. The word of God however makes it clear that just as every believer receives and is indwelt by the Father and Son at salvation, this same fact is true of the
Holy Spirit of God.

Romans 8:9

But ye are not in the flesh, but in the _____, if so be that the ______ of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the _____ of Christ, he is none of his.

Note that the determining factor of whether or not a person belongs to God rests in whether or not they have the Spirit of God dwelling in them. One can not separate the presence of the Holy Spirit and salvation – you either have both or neither. To speak of receiving the actual presence of
the Holy Spirit as a separate event from being saved is simply not consistent with the word of God.

Galatians 3:2

his only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the ___________ of faith?

The obvious answer to the question is that the Galatian Christians received the Spirit by “the hearing of faith.” Referring back to Galatians 2:16, it is clear that the context of this passage is salvation. When the gospel is “heard” and “faith” in Jesus Christ is exercised, then the Holy Spirit is
received. Note how that in each of the following verses which speak of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, the context is referring to the salvation of believers and not to a point in time after their salvation.
