Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the ____________ shall not be forgiven unto men. Some aspects of the Charismatic movement incorporate a broad range of sins under the banner
of blaspheming the Holy Ghost and fail to read the passage as it stands. Note from the context of the
passage in Matthew 12:24-32) that:

1) Jesus is addressing Jewish Pharisees (vs. 24 & 31 – “I say unto YOU”) who had proven
their unbelief and rejection of the Son of God on numerous occasions;
2) The time frame of this event is long before the sacrificial death of Christ on the cross of
Calvary; and
3) The only sin to which Jesus applies this unpardonable aspect is the verbal accusation that
an exorcism performed by Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit was done by the
power of the devil (v. 24).

The New Testament believer however finds himself on the OTHER side of the crucifixion
of Christ with the many promises that ALL of his sins can be forgiven through Christ. Jesus is not
physically on earth casting out devils – therefore, the opportunity to verbally accuse him of acting by the
power of the devil is simply not a possibility.

Your church may label some other sin as unpardonable or as a blasphemy of the Holy
Spirit, but the Scriptures simply do not support such an effort. Try as we might, God labels no other sin
in his word as unpardonable.
