Class 4 – Jesus Revealed a New Relationship that the Spirit Would Enter into with Men

1. John 14:16-17

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of ______; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

 

1) Prior to Jesus’ death, the Spirit “dwelled with” men
2) After this point, He would be “in” men
3) Whatever form this reception took, it would be permanent

This was a new teaching! No one in the Old Testament was guaranteed this permanent
indwelling of the Spirit. In I Samuel 16:14 the Holy Spirit departed from Saul. In the verse below, King
David was clearly concerned about losing the Spirit. According to Jesus, such a loss would have been an
impossibility for his disciples.
